Seniors 2 0 Temple
Sat 6th Feb
Munster Senior League
Bandon were
very slow to get into the game but were awarded a free kick on 12 minutes just
outside the eighteen yard line, up stood Stephen Lawlor who’s shot deflected
off the Temple defender and into the back of the net. 1-0 to Bandon. Both teams
tried to play a good passing game but this was made hard by the heavy ground so
play was below par for much of the first half. Bandon had a few more chances to
extend their lead in the 1st half but were unable to tuck the ball
home. Temple tried in vain to get an equaliser but a tremendous performance in
center half from Nigel Waugh made it extremely difficult for them. In the
second half the pace of the game rose and it was end to end football for the
first ten minutes of the second half with both teams having half chances. After
55 minutes Bandon were awarded a penalty as O’ Donovan rounded the keeper
before being tripped. Ger Crean stepped up and slotted the ball into the bottom
left hand corner. Things were now looking very good for Bandon. Temple pushed
and pushed to get that goal to bring them back into the tie but Bandon’s
defence was standing firm. Bandon held their nerve very well near the end as
Temple made a last stitch attack with a cross from the right which came right
across the face of the goal but Knight tipped the ball onto the crossbar.
Moments later the final whistle was blown to give Bandon their first win of the
season and also their first clean sheet. It was a well deserved victory.
The Seniors took the field against Garryduff on Saturday and this was proven with quite a good performance from the Bandon team. They created the opening chance as striker Cullen hit post with a decent effort. It was a very close affair for the first 20 minutes but it was the visitors who took the lead when they caught Bandon on the break, the ball was slotted home by Garryduff’s number 7. Bandon pressed for the remainder of the half with Tyner hitting the crossbar from 40 yards out. It was 0-1 going in at half time. Bandon came out in the second half searching for that equaliser but were once again caught on the break and the goal was well taken to make it 2-0 to Garryduff. Bandon kept fighting, threatening well from corners but could not find that goal. Cullen had a good chance with 20 minutes to go but was denied by good keeping. It finished 2-0 and Bandon head to CIT Thursday 4th Feb still looking for their first league victory of this season. Best for Bandon were Ger Crean and Adam Tobin. Mark O’ Riordan also did well at Left back. Manager Ger Grady put the result down to missed chances.

Glasheen 3 - 2 Seniors
4th October Munster Senior League
Bandon Seniors entered this game on the back of a bad defeat and were determined to get a result. Glasheen, entered the game with one win and one defeat. The game started with some scrappy play from both sides. Eventually, the game settled and it was Glasheen who had the best of the opening chances. Bandon worked hard though and defended well with O’ Regan and Lawlor performing well in the back line. Unfortunately though the good work was forgotten when Glasheen took the lead when a ball over the top, which could’ve been argued as being offside was not dealt with by the Bandon defence. A low cross was drilled in by the Glasheen winger and Bandon keeper O’ Donovan palmed it into goal. 1-0 Glasheen. Bandon now needed their midfield to start performing as they went in search of an equaliser. Bandon’s midfield obliged and some good play created three good chances for the two strikers Cullen and Antepu. Unfortunately the ball would not hit the back of the net. Bandon kept pressing though but were caught 5minutes before halftime when Glasheen cleared the ball, a tremendous through ball cut open the Bandon defence. 2-0 and hope of a result was looking slim. At halftime, a stern team talk from Manager Gerry Grady rejuvenated the Bandon side. They came out fighting in the second half. Ten minutes in a cross from Stephen Moloney was dropped by the Glasheen keeper and Eddie Antepu was on hand to pull one back for Bandon in a true stiker’s fashion. 2-1 and game on! Bandon pressed and pressed but the chances just wouldn’t go in. As Bandon pressed, they were were being caught on the break but a superb performance in center half from Adam Tobin denied Glasheen any clear cut chances. With 20 minutes to go, a poorly cleared ball was pounced on by the Glasheen forward who passed inside to his strike partner whos shot was blocked by O’ Regan but this fell to him again and Bandon failed to get the block in. 3-1. It again looked as if a result may have been out of sight but Bandon showed great fight and with 15minutes to go they were awarded a penalty which was slotted home confidently by Ray Brennan. Bandon then continued to press with chances falling to Cullen and Linehan but they couldn’t find the net. An undeserved 3-2 defeat for the lads, they most definetly deserved a draw if not the win. A good performance from Bandon and it looks certain that the first win is soon coming for this very young team. Bandon Boss Gerry Grady hailed the character of his side.
