SEPT 6TH '09
Leeds 4 Bandon 0 On, what could only be described as
monsoon conditions, a very eager Bandon team arrived for their first
league outing of the new season. Despite torrential downpours etc, the
match was given the go ahead. The very eager Bandon team lined out as
per managers best intentions.
Leeds a vastly superior
team in both height and skill started well and won 2 corners in
succession, which were dealt with superbly by Bandon lacking their
stalwart central defender Gearoid Collins, (who had cried off very
close to kick off). Replacement Elliot Assemota deputised immaculately
throughout the first half. Also, Dave McSweeney, under severe pressure
from the Leeds raiding left winger dealt apporopriately with the
ensuing attacks. 15 minutes into the 1st half a half hit pass to the
Leeds right winger, (who by the way, and agreed by Leeds management,
was the proverbial MILE offside), centred for an easy tap in goal. 1-0
Leeds.
With 4 minutes to go to half-time, Leeds again mounted an
attack which led to a superb save from Aaron Ryan in goal.
Unfotunately, the resulting rebound from the post of the goal fell
straight to the unmarked centreforward who had an easy tap in for Leeds
to go 2-0 up at the break.
At half time, Dave McSweeney
and Andy Nolan, (managers) gave players their 2nd half instructions on
how to approach the second half. The changes made were, Timmy McCarthy
replaced by David Laffin.
Within 5 minutes of the
restart Leeds scored a breakaway 3rd goal which effectively ended the
game. A number of switches to try to improve Bandons effectiveness
seemed to work but again Leeds superior height/strength led to a fourth
goal killing any hope of a Bandon recovery.
Best for Bandon on the day were, Aaron Ryan,(goalie), Dave
McSweeney, (Right Back) and Elliot Assemota (Central
Defender/Midfielder). Sub David Laffan, midfielder Dawid
Garbulinski& left back Dylan Galvin also put in strong performances.
This Leeds team is a very strong team and Bandon should not
feel downhearted in any way with their performance. All players against
the odds, (weather and slightly superior team), gave their all in this
game. The admirable fact after the game was that Bandon players were in
very high spirits afterwards which is a true reflection that they are
KEEN to do better. Knowing this both Dave and myself are happy that
this team WILL go a long way.
