Bandon v Ballincollig
Sunday 24 th January 2010
Bandon got back to winning ways after the previous defeat to Mayfield where the lack of training and matches, due to the inclement weather, showed. A new look side with changes in positions and a change back to the old familiar 4-4-2. Bandon took the game to Ballincollig from the start but met stiff resistance from a strong Ballincollig back four. But keeping to their task Bandon eventually broke through with Micheal McSweeney scoring once again. Pa O’Brien in his new role as striker and his strike partner Mike O’Donoghue worked tirelessly to try and put another score on the board but to no avail.
Conor Lynch as midfield sweeper was enjoying his new role and took to it like a duck to water with Micheal McSweeney forging forward with every opportunity given. Tom McCarthy and Niall Murray on the flanks broke down a lot of attacks but failed to counter attack when it was most needed. Sweeper Andy O’Connell had to leave the park with a bad injury to his ankle before half time and was replaced by Jack Scannell at right back with John O’Donovan taking over as sweeper. Marshall Kingston, Captain and Centre back staved off any attack from the Ballincollig strikers and Oisin Twomey was back to his “terrier” like self with tenacious tackling and preventing any runs on the wing from Ballincollig. Micheal McSweeney popped up again in the right place to score another goal to leave the score at 2-0 at half time.
Ballincollig came at Bandon again immediately after the start of the second half but Bandon won the physical battle pushing Ballincollig back into their own half. Ballincollig began to take long range shots but goalkeeper Oisin Healy measured everyone to perfection bringing off some tremendous saves.
With Bandon pushing forward they won a free about 25 yards out and John O’Donovan stood up to the mark and rattled the top left hand corner of the Ballincollig goal leaving the score at 3-0.
Niall Murray was replaced by V. J. Ramos whose strides down the left wing upset the Ballincollig defence on numerous occasions. The twin strike force of O’Donoghue and O’Brien were replaced by the real twin strike force of Rory and Colm Fogarty who gave a good account of themselves with Rory having a shot on target and Colm holding up the ball well. David O’Neill replaced Tom McCarthy on the right wing.
In the dying minutes of the game Ballincollig threw everything at Bandon bar the kitchen sink and scored two goals from what could be termed as goalmouth schemozzles with the ball bouncing off everything and sundry and unfortunately ending up in the back of our net twice. Bandon held out and breathed a sigh of relief when the final whistle was blown with both teams showing true qualities, giving spirit, respect and honesty, the three qualities expected from any team.
Lets hope the same spirit shows up next week for the game at home to Ringmahon Rangers when hopefully the weather will allow us two games in a row.

Bandon v Rockmount
15/11/09
Bandon under 14’s welcomed Rockmount to the Town Park in probably one of the only games to be played this rain-soaked weekend. Rockmount arrived with a team who have played 6 games undefeated with 4 wins and 2 draws with 9 goals scored and 2 conceded. A formidable task for any team to overcome but Bandon were up to the challenge and attacked from the start. Play moved from end to end with the defences coming out on top and very few shots on target with bodies being put on the line.
Bandon conceded a free on the town side of the pitch on the half hour mark which Oisin Healy tipped on to the upright and dropped at the feet of an incoming Rockmount player who slotted it home to leave the score at 1-0. Unfortunately not long after this Bandon lost Andy O’Connell when he pulled a muscle in his leg after taking a long range free kick.
The score remained the same up to half time.
Bandon came out in the second half full of vigour, with a strong wind behind them, but were put on the back foot when Conor Lynch was deemed to have fouled a Rockmount player in the box. The resultant penalty was converted leaving the score at 2-0. Mike Cahalane took over the free taking duties having moved to midfield instead of Andy O’Connell. It was from one of his frees, taken from almost the same place as Rockmounts in the first half, which gave Bandon’s first goal with Mike O’Donoghue meeting the free on the volley and fired through a crowd of players for his first goal of the season. This left the score at 2-1.
Rockmount replied almost immediately reacting quickly to a misunderstanding between our goalie and a defender and made the score 3-1. Down at the other end Bandon were awarded a penalty which Tom McCarthy stepped up to take. The goalie saved, but a Rockmount player was deemed to have moved forward before the ball was struck and the penalty had to be re-taken which Tom finished well to the net. A bad clearance from a Bandon player in our 18 yard box went straight to a Rockmount player who scored by shooting to the bottom right of our goal. The final whistle was blown shortly after, with the final score at Bandon 2 Rockmount 4.

BANDON 2 2 CORINTHIANS
Premier League Leaders Corinthians came to the Town Park with a very good record . They had played 6 games winning 4 and no loss to their credit. Bandon having lost their last three league games were without Marshall Kingston and Jack O’Toole through injury. But such is the depth of the squad this year that we fielded a very strong side which was felt by the management should hold their own.
The game started at a blistering pace with both teams going “hammer and tongs” at each other. With just 8 minutes on the clock Mike Cahalane ended his goal drought with a superbly taken goal with an assist from his strike pertner David O’Neill.
Corinthians did not settle and came back at the Bandon defence and with relentless pressure forced a goal in the 15th minute leaving the score at one apiece. Bandon went on the offensive almost straight away looking for the leading goal and with a Corinthians player making an error Micheal McSweeney capitalised and finished to the back of the net with applomb.
Corinthians not to be out done came looking for an equaliser and scored an easy goal in the 26th minute. The scores remained 2-2 up to half time.
At the start of the second half both teams adopted a much physical approach to the game and Jack Scannell tightened up in his corner of the field cutting out numerous attacks down the wing. Conor Lynch in the centre of the backs cleared a lot of balls and John O’Donovan is beginning to show a maturity with his carefully timed tackles, which interrupted the flow of the Corinthians attack.
It was end to end stuff for the rest of the game with Niall Murray breaking down attacks on the left wing and going on the offensive on numerous occasions.
Tom McCarthy on the right wing doing likewise set up a number of attacks. Andy O’Connell who plays as a midfield sweeper broke down a number of attacks and was ably assisted in the middle by Pa O’Brien and Micheal McSweeney. Jack O’Toole in goal performed well throughout the game and helped keep the score level throughout the second half.
Michael O Donoghue replaced David O’Neill on 50 minutes and almost immediately scored with one of his “jinks” rounding two defenders on the left and just missing goal on the left. Oisin Twomey replaced Tom McCarthy on the 60th minute and defended well on the right wing and created numerous chances.
Bandon pulverised the Corinthians goal in the last five minutes looking for the winning goal, with shots coming off the crossbar, the upright, a Corinthians defender on the line and forcing 3 corners and 2 frees. But it was all to no avail with the final whistle blowing and the score remaining, as it did at half time 2-2.
A very spirited performance and a vital point for when the end of the season reckonings come to the fore.

Jack O’Toole, John O’Donovan, Conor Lynch, Jack Scannell, Andy O’Connell, Thomas McCarthy (Oisin Twomey 60), Pa O’Brien (Capt.), Micheal McSweeney, Niall Murray, Mike Cahalane, David O’Neill.

RINGMAHON RANGERS 3 1 BANDON
Bandon travelled to Ringmahon on Sunday hopeful of a win with a strong squad though depleted by injuries and sickness.
Bandon got off to a great start with a goal, playing against the wind, in the ninth minute which Niall Murray calmly tucked away. This was his 4th goal of the season which isn’t bad for a midfielder. Bandon continued to close down midfield and stemmed the flow of runs by Ringmahon.
Midfield sweeper Andy O’Connell broke down a lot of attacks as did Jack Scannell who was only starting his first full game. Micheal McSweeney created a lot of chances with his dribbling skills. Pa O’Brien was a constant thorn in the Ringmahon side and the defensive trio of John O’Donovan, Marshall Kingston and Conor Lynch cleared an amount of balls with David O’Neill ever reliable in goal.
Up front the twin “ Mikes” Cahalane and O’Donoghue bore down on goal but just left their finishing touches behind them on the day.
The score remained 1-0 up to half time. Bandon came out battling in the second half and looked the stronger team but Ringmahon were awarded a penalty after ten minutes, which they converted to leave the score at 1-1.
Shortly afterwards the referee awarded another penalty which they converted again leavin the score at 2-1 to Ringmahon.
Bandon pounded the Ringmahon defence with numerous attacks in search of a vital point but to no avail. Ringmahon broke out of defence from one of these attacks and scored a third which was well taken. Shane Barry replaced Mike O’Donoghue and Thomas McCarthy replaced Pa O’Brien.
With about 4 minutes to go Marshall Kingston broke from defence on a run which looked destined for a goal, but was taken down savagely in midfield, which resulted in the Ringmahon player being red carded and Marshall having to attend hospital for treatment. He was replaced by Rory Fogarty in defence.
Result: Ringmahon Rangers 3 Bandon 1.

BANDON 2 4 LEEDS
With last weeks game called off because of the All Ireland Final this game was eagerly awaited as both teams had done battle two years previous. That year it was one each, so excitement reached fever pitch. David O’Neill off with a sprained thumb so John O’Donovan stood up to the mark and ably replaced him. Bandon started well and were hopeful of winning this game and were rewarded when in the 20th minute Conor Lynch let fly at a ball, after a goalmouth melee, which came out from a corner and the referee awarded a goal even though the ball ended up behind the goal. The Leeds players and management were not in agreement and two players were yellow carded.
Three minutes later the referee awarded a dubious penalty which Leeds converted, leaving the score at 1-1
In the 25th minute a midfield breakaway led to a defence splitting pass which their forward took and calmly tucked away leaving the score at 2-1 at half time.
Bandon came out full of vigour at the start of the second half and were immediately rewarded when midfielder Micheal McSweeney scored a cracker of a goal to leave
The score at 2-2.
It was end to end stuff for the next 15 minutes with both defences coming out on top, but a mistake from a Bandon midfielder left a Leeds player through the middle, somehow the ball found its way to the net leaving the score at 3-2 to the visitors.
With two minutes to go a Leeds player hit a ball in hope more than expectation which hit the crossbar bounced on the goal line, hopped up again to the crossbar and was cleared by John O Donovan but the referee awarded a goal, leaving the final score at Bandon 2 Leeds 4.

INNISHVILLA 3 4 BANDON
After two humiliating defeats at the hands of Innishvilla last year both management and players were determined that nothing but a win would suffice on this occasion on their visit to Jake O’Donoghue Park.
Playing under the mid-day sun made the going tough for both teams, with copious amounts of water being consumed throughout the game, which was played at a blistering pace for the entire 70 minutes. Bandon took the lead with a cracker of a goal from midfield sweeper Andy O’Connell at about the quarter stage. Bandon held this lead up to half time with the newly assembled defence of John O’Donovan, Marshall Kingston and Conor Lynch denying every Innishvilla attempts at shooting or landing a ball in our last third. David O’Neill’s handling in goal was excellent.
Almost immediately after the second half started Niall Murray hit a blistering shot which deflected off a defender and rounded the goalkeeper for a second goal. Shortly after this Innishvilla put in a cross from the left wing which wasn’t dealt with and scored their first goal. Innishvilla kept pressurising and a half shot spun off our goalkeepers hands into the net to put the score at 2-2. Pa O’Brien, Micheal Mc Sweeney and Jack O’Toole worked tirelessly at midfield defending and attacking but to no avail with Innishvilla’s defence holding out, keeping Mike Cahalane and Tom Mccarthy scoreless. With 15 minutes left Shane Barry was introduced into attack and almost immediately scored a goal with a confidence that many mature players lack. This brought the score to 3-2. Almost immediately afterwards a shot from Innishvilla resulted in a dubious penalty which they converted leaving, the score at 3-3 and heartbeats racing on the pitch and on both sidelines.
In the dying seconds of the game following a long range effort from Bandon’s midfield the Innishvilla goalkeeper dropped the ball which was pounced on by a number of Bandon players but slotted into the back of the net by goal poacher extraordinaire Shane Barry to give Bandon victory in this local derby.
